The Science Behind OraStrip

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums by anaerobic microorganisms including Porphyromonas and Treponema species. Hidden below the gum line, these microbes produce metabolic products called thiols that disrupt gum tissue and induce bone loss.

OraStrip measures the concentration of thiols at the gingival margin. The intensity of the color reaction on the strip is directly related to the concentration of thiols in the sample, and the concentrations of thiols are directly related to severity of periodontal infection.
